Teaser for Finnish TV show that highlights Hancock released

Hancock episode to be shown on Nov. 20

This week the first teaser for a Finnish television series that will feature Finlandia University was released.

Antti Holma is the host of the Finnish show, which begins October 23. He came tot he Copper Country in March to shoot an episode highlight the area’s Finnish American heritage.

Dylan Evans Weiler joins Finlandia’s International School of Art & Design

Finlandia University’s International School of Art & Design has welcomed Dylan Evans Weiler as Assistant Professor of Studio Arts/Intermedia. After several years spent living and working in southern California, Houston, Seattle, Portland, Grand Rapids and Interlochen, Weiler is returning to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Save the date: Musician and storyteller Ben Sollee at Orpheum Theatre on November 8

Cellist, composer and storyteller Ben Sollee will be coming to Hancock for a micro residency that will Finnish with a concert on Wednesday, November 8 at 7 p.m. at Orpheum Theatre. The event will be free for students. Additional information on Sollee’s visit and concert will be released as the event nears. This event is being hosted by Finlandia University.

Nordic Film Series opens with Finnish comedy

The 2017-18 Nordic Film Series at Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center opens October 12 with two showings of the Finnish comedy “3 Simoa” (Simo Times Three). The showings will take place at 2 and 6 p.m. in the Heritage Center’s Martha Wiljanen Community Hall.

Hot Pstromi presenting at heritage center on October 16

Yale Strom brings his group Hot Pstromi, a quartet this time, back to the Calumet Theatre on Monday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. Along with Strom on violin, Elizabeth Schwartz, vocals, and Peter Stan, accordian, Amos Hoffman joins on guitar and oud. In addition, to the performance, Strom will present on links between Finnish Folk music and Klezmer music.at the Finnish American Heritage Center at 3 p.m. on the 16th. Flu Clinic coming to campus on October 11

All students and employees are invited to the annual Finlandia University Flu Clinic on Wednesday, October 11 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Finlandia Hall.

This event brings flu shots to campus in a joint effort between Finlandia nursing students and the Western U.P. Health Department. Employees with Finlandia’s insurance will be able to get the shot for free. Other insurances may be accepted, those interested should bring their insurance card. The shot is $30 without insurance.

It’s On Us Week of Action with Erin Barnett on Finlandia Fridays

This week Finlandia Fridays was visited by Dean of Students Erin Barnett to promote the campus wide It’s On Us campaign. It’s On Us is a national campaign that was started by former Vice President Joe Biden that raises awareness for sexual assault. Finlandia was awarded a grant from the Michigan State Police to advocate the campaign.
