Free Covid-19 Testing Available Oct. 3 at Gates Tennis Center

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Western Upper Peninsula Health Department and Michigan Technological University are partnering to offer free Covid-19 testing this weekend at the Gates Tennis Center located at 600 Maciness Drive in Houghton.

The testing is available Saturday, October 3 from 9am to 2pm to anyone and doesn’t require pre-registration, insurance, a prescription or a doctor’s order.

Singles rooms available for Fall 2017 in Finlandia Hall

Single rooms in Finlandia Hall are available for students on a first-come first-serve basis for the Fall 2017 semester.

“These rooms are always in high demand as they provide an excellent experience for our students,” Director of Residence Life Leann Fogle said. “If interested, I would highly suggest moving quickly because this opportunity is not likely to be available long.”

TRIO Upward Bound receives $1.77 million grant

Finlandia University has been officially notified by the U.S. Department of Education of the successful grant submission for another five year TRIO grant for $353,718 per year ($1,768,590 total). TRIO Upward Bound will be funded from 2017 to 2022 with this new proposal, and aid students from Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw counties find success in high school to prepare for beyond.

Barnett named Dean of Students at Finlandia

Erin Barnett has been named Dean of Students at Finlandia University. Barnett has been with Finlandia since September 2013, advancing from Coordinator of Academic Support Services to Director of Academic Success and Student Life in May 2014, before accepting this position in July 2017.

Finlandia expanding community enrichment offerings

This fall Finlandia University is introducing two new community enrichment courses, “The Gospel of Luke: Then and Now” and “Spiritual Information in Everyday Living.” The courses will begin September 11 and will last eight weeks. Registration is currently open.

Mark Wilhelm named executive director of Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities

CHICAGO – The Rev. Mark N. Wilhelm has been named executive director of the Network of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Colleges and Universities.

Wilhelm previously served as ELCA program director for schools, which included early childhood, elementary, secondary and colleges and universities. He was appointed interim executive director of the network when it was established in 2015.

New transcript request service in place at FinnU

Finlandia University’s Registrar’s Office has partnered with Parchment to streamline its transcript request services.

“The new service for requesting transcripts provides more options to our alum when requesting their Finlandia University academic history,” Registrar Jason Sullivan said. “This new process not only allows for transcripts to be delivered electronically, or through the traditional postal manner, it will also allow for the person doing the request to receive email updates in regard to the processing of their transcripts.

Finlandia University is excited to introduce a new monthly e-mail newsletter aimed at parents of Finlandia’s current students. Parents are invited now to subscribe to the newsletter, and the first one will be sent Monday at 9 a.m.
