Thank you for your interest in work study at Finlandia. You must have work-study in your financial aid award before you can fill out any employment paperwork or secure a work-study job. If you do not have work-study in your award (or are unsure), please contact the Office of Financial Aid to check on availability and eligibility.

If you do have work-study in your financial aid award, you will be required to have all employment paperwork completed and turned in to the Office of Financial Aid before you can begin your job.

Work-Study Program Description

The work-study program at Finlandia University is administered and coordinated by the Office of Financial Aid and Human Resources. The University receives funds each year from the federal government to administer the program and pay the students.

The work-study program provides part-time jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay for education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related to the student’s course of study whenever possible. It also can be a resume builder by helping a student get their “foot in the door” and gain some valuable experience in a particular field before leaving school.

Students are paid by the hour and receive a paycheck bi-weekly. Wages paid under the program must equal at least the current federal minimum wage but may be higher depending on the type of work, required skills, or experience. Finlandia University currently pays a wage ranging from $9.65 to $11 per hour. The number of hours required a week will depend on the size of award the student has received. Currently, in order to offer the widest number of students an opportunity to participate, all work-study awards are being given at the amount of $1,250/semester.

A STUDENTS WORK-STUDY ELIGIBILITY FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR IS BASED ON:

  1. When the student applied for financial aid (students must complete the FAFSA form).
  2. Financial need.
  3. Whether or not the student has registered for classes in the upcoming school year.
  4. The University’s funding level. Students must also be U.S. or naturalized citizens.

Finlandia University does not have an institutional work-study program. All funding received for work-study is currently from the federal government. As a result, funding is limited and students must fill out a FAFSA form and be financially eligible to receive a work-study award.

Students may work either on or off-campus; however there are a limited number of off-campus jobs. Off-campus employment must be with either a private, non-profit organization or a public agency, and the work performed must be in the public interest. We currently have placements in the community with the Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock, CLK Schools in the Calumet area, and the Houghton-Portage Elementary School in Houghton.

On-campus employment can be found in such departments and offices as the library, cafeteria, campus administrative offices, mail center, the bookstore, academic departments, athletics and the residence hall to mention just a few. The work-study coordinator and work-study supervisors will determine the number of students needed in each department each year. The program generally has around 150 students participating in the program each academic year.

Work-Study “How-To” Process to Gain Employment

  1. All students must have been awarded work-study and have completed and returned the employment packet (obtained by the Office of Financial Aid) they received. You cannot begin working until this information and your financial aid packet have been submitted to the Financial Aid office. Forms for returning and new students can be found here toward the bottom of the page Financial Aid Forms under Federal Work-Study Program.
  2. Look over the list of available job openings and pick out a number of jobs the would interest you. Contact the supervisor of that department to check for availability, schedule compatibility, and any possible qualifications that may be required. The list of job postings will updated under the “Work Study Job Openings” section at the top of this page.
  3. Secure a job with the supervisor of that job opening and have them sign the blue Student Assignment Sheet (can be obtained by the Office of Financial Aid). Supervisors will not be able to hire you under the work-study program unless you have a blue student assignment sheet. This is available in the Office of Financial Aid.
  4. Have the Work-Study Assignment Sheet returned to the Office of Financial Aid.
  5. Plan a schedule with your supervisor and begin working at your new job. Time sheets will be completed electronically on ADP Workforce Now.  If you do not have a log in, please contact Marie Bonenfant (marie.bonenfant@finlandia.edu). Please note the due dates for you time sheets on the ADP home page. In order to guarantee your paycheck is not delayed, all time sheets must be turned in by this date.

The Financial aid Office must have completed employment packet and a signed student assignment sheet in your file, along with a completed financial aid file, before you can begin working.
