Archive to temporarily close to complete reorganization

HANCOCK, Mich. — The next steps in a significant project — one that is enhancing customer service efficiency and helping to maximize available archival storage space — make it necessary that Finlandia University’s Finnish American Historical Archive close to visitors and researchers from October 25 through November 5.

Rajala joins Financial Aid staff

Finlandia’s Financial Aid department recently welcomed alumna Jenna Rajala (’15) as the new Coordinator of Student Accounts. Rajala started her higher education journey as a Finlandia student in 2004 and returned to finish her Physical Therapist Assistant degree at the university in 2015.

“This will be my third adventure at Finlandia but my first experience as a staff member,” Rajala said.

Dean of Enrollment talks 60 in 60 on Finlandia Fridays

Dean of Enrollment Anthony Schwass joins Finlandia Fridays this week to talk about the admissions team’s new campaign, 60 in 60.

“There are roughly 60 high schools and career technical education centers, or CTE’s, in the U.P. and we’re planning on visiting them all in 60 days,” Schwass said. “We aren’t just popping in once and not coming back until the next year. Our plan is really to build the relationships we have with these local schools into true partnerships.”

Finlandia Admissions collaborating with U.P. high schools

Finlandia’s admissions team is hitting the road in the Upper Peninsula this fall with 60 high school visits planned in 60 days. The campaign named none other than “60 in 60” sets out to engage with students in their classrooms with sessions covering personal and professional development, career planning, FAFSA Q&A’s and many other topics revolving around student development.

Johnson to step down after academic year, 16th president in 125 years

On October 6, President Philip Johnson informed the Finlandia University Board of Trustees that he will be stepping down at the end of the current academic year.

In a letter to the trustees, President Johnson wrote, “It has been a profound privilege and deep joy to serve Finlandia’s Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students. I am confident new leadership will emerge that is able to lead Finlandia toward a more prosperous future.”

Finlandia Gallery announces Gerald Matthew Immonen exhibit and reception

Finlandia University was honored to receive a collection of artwork by the preeminent Finnish American artist Gerald Matthew Immonen.  In 1996 Immonen was the featured artist in Finlandia University’s Annual Contemporary Finnish American Artist Series Exhibition, the longest running exhibit series in the United States celebrating the accomplishments of Finnish American artists.

Sophomore Gavin Mackey, a graphic design major and Hancock local, has two favorite things; computing and art. Ever since Mackey was in his early teens, he was messing around in Adobe Photoshop creating pixel art and posters. His love for graphic design spiraled from there.

O’Neill begins as Assistant Nursing Professor for College of Health Sciences

Renee O’Neill has joined the Hirvonen College of Health Sciences faculty as an Assistant Professor of Nursing. O’Neill earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Webster University in St. Louis and her Master of Science in Nursing, specializing in midwifery from Frontier Nursing University. This will be her first year teaching at the university level and she looks forward to getting to know the other staff and students during the fall semester.

Gary Kruzich is joining the International School of Business as a new Assistant Professor of Marketing and the Athletic Partnerships Manager. Kruzich brings over 25 years of corporate marketing experience as well as five years of higher education teaching experience. Kruzich earned his Bachelor of Science in 2015, his Master of Science in Sports Management in 2016 and his Master of Business Administration in 2018 from Liberty University.

Meet Mariana Nakashima, new Administrative Assistant for ISB and SCAS

Joining Finlandia’s staff this fall as the new Administrative Assistant for the International School of Business (ISB) and Suomi College of Arts and Sciences (SCAS) is Mariana Nakashima.

Nakashima attended the University of Toledo while attaining her industrial engineering degree with a concentration in ergonomics. Bringing along years of experience in time management, policies and procedures from work in the auto industry, Nakashima also has experience in teaching Art and Spanish.
