Virtanen to present at online public symposium: Exploring Sugar Island’s Early Finnish History

In 1916, a Finnish immigrant to North America, Frank Aaltonen, visited Sugar Island, Michigan, and was highly impressed by the opportunities the island presented. The island was the traditional home of the Anishinaabeg, but by the early 20th century, its population was a mixture of several ethnicities. Aaltonen envisioned the island as a Finnish colony of farmers. A recruiting campaign ensued, and by the 1930s several hundred Finns had moved on the island. Finlandia Board of Trustees names Presidential Search Committee, national executive search firm

The Finlandia University Board of Trustees has made significant advancements in the search for Finlandia’s next president, announcing the establishment of the Presidential Search Committee and selection of a national executive search firm. The search follows the October announcement of current Finlandia President Philip Johnson, who is to step down after the 2021-22 academic year.

Higher education resource guide releases the best institution programs for 2022

Hancock, MI– Intelligent.com has named Finlandia University one of the Best Colleges in Michigan in 2022 for the second year in a row.

Intelligent.com put over 75 hours into its research, ranking FinnU #12 after identifying and comparing 280 programs at 56 select universities and colleges across the state.

31st Annual Contemporary Finnish American Artist Series Exhibition Virtual Reception | Finlandia University Gallery

On Thursday, December 9, 2021, the Finlandia University Gallery held a virtual reception of the 31st Annual Contemporary Finnish American Artist Series Exhibition featuring the artwork of Natalie Salminen Rude. The exhibit is open to the public until Feb. 4.

Gerald Matthew Immonen Collection Virtual Tour | Finlandia University Gallery

Earlier this year, Finlandia University was the proud recipient of a collection of artwork by the preeminent Finnish American artist Gerald Matthew Immonen (1936-2011). Immonen’s ties to Finlandia go back decades as once a featured artist in the Finlandia University Annual Contemporary Finnish American Artist Series Exhibition, the longest-running exhibit series in the United States celebrating the accomplishments of Finnish American artists.

Perreault (’18) elected to CLK Foundation Board of Directors

Nathan Perreault, an Assistant Professor of Management with Finlandia’s International School of Business (ISB), was recently elected to the Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw (CLK) Foundation Board of Directors. The foundation is a local non-profit organization created to support students of the CLK school system by funding programs aimed at providing an extra edge in today’s competitive world.

Finlandia is pleased to welcome new Enrollment Counselor Kat Hanson to the Enrollment team. Hanson comes to Finlandia University with an educational background from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota with two Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Race & Ethnic Studies.
