Student support initiatives at Finlandia University provide opportunities for alumni, families and friends to remove barriers and promote academic and spiritual success for all students. These initiatives are characterized by selfless devotion, endless generosity and support.
Raising a record $15,000 for Giving Day 2021, a fundraiser established by the Finlandia Alumni Board (FAB) to raise money for student textbook awards, the FAB realized an opportunity to share this expression with other on-campus student support initiatives. In doing so, the FAB presented a check to Finlandia’s Textbook Justice Library in the amount of $1,750 along with a check to North Wind Books for $1,000. The Textbook Justice Library purchases textbooks for FinnU students to use, free of charge, while the donation to North Wind Books was used to help students purchase Math course codes necessary for classes.
Finlandia Alumni Board President Monica Hill presented the check to Assistant English Professor Carolyn Dekker, alongside Head Librarian Rebecca Daly, who have played lead roles in developing the Textbook Justice Library into what it is today.
“It certainly means a lot to the students to know that the alumni did this for them,” Dekker said. “This has really been from Finlandia student to Finlandia student for these last 6 years. It means a lot that they are helping each other. Thank you.”
For years, the Textbook Justice Library has offered students a chance to donate their textbooks at the end of each semester instead of selling them. The FAB’s donation to the Textbook Justice Library will help preserve this opportunity for students in need. Thanks to charitable giving from Finlandia’s Community, countless students will benefit from the Textbook Justice Library for years to come.
