Finlandia Hall hosting Walk to End Alzheimer’s fundraiser

Finlandia University is a proud partner in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s event that is taking place in the Finnish American Heritage Center on September 10, starting at 10 a.m.

Along with Finlandia students and employees walking in the event, FinnU will be holding a raffle for a small Finlandia gift basket, graciously donated by North Wind Books, during student check-ins in Finlandia hall. The Table is seeking donations

As we look to begin another year, we also look to continue serving those in need. “The Table: A student needs pantry” is looking on the light side, and is in need of immediate donations to begin the school year to assist with our student’s needs in many and various ways.

Please consider bringing in some early donations to “The Table” such as (but not limited to):

Hancock native to lead graphic design program at FinnU

Finlandia University has hired Tom Adolphs as Assistant Professor of Graphic Design. Adolphs is a Hancock native that is just about finished with his Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Technical Communication from Michigan Technological University.

“Being able to work here is a dream come true,” said Adolphs. “I enjoy being in this town, and adding to it.”

Orientation 2016 is August 25-27

Incoming students will begin their Finlandia University careers on Thursday, August 25 during New Student Orientation 2016.

“This is going to be an amazing first couple of days on campus,” Director of Academic Success and Student Life Erin Barnett said. “Students will gain instrumental information during the days, and be introduced to much of the natural beauty Lake Superior and Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula have to offer during the evenings.”

Psychology department welcomes Dr. Jillian O’Rourke Stuart

Finlandia University and its Suomi College of Arts & Sciences has hired Dr. Jillian O’Rourke Stuart as Assistant Professor of Psychology. Stuart is coming to Hancock after completing her doctorate studies at the University of Iowa.

“I’m excited to get to the Upper Peninsula and Finlandia,” Dr. Stuart said. “I went to a small liberal arts school for my undergrad degree, and I always wanted to go back to that kind of environment.”

Road construction now in front of Finlandia in Hancock

This summer the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is reconstructing about a mile of US-41 in Hancock from the Portage Lake Lift Bridge to Lincoln Drive. Late last week the project moved in front of Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center, future College of Health Sciences building and North Wind Books.

Shawn Wickersheim Memorial Fund now accepting donations

New Wickersheim Student Lounge to open in August

Friends and family of the late Shawn Wickersheim (’08) are coming together to memorialize Shawn through the formation of the Shawn Wickersheim Memorial Fund. Wickersheim passed away at the age of 29 in August of 2015.
