Campus Read 2016-17 spotlights racial justice

Classes across campus this week are reading  Danez Smith’s work in advance of Smith’s visit to campus on September 30.  Smith was selected as the Campus Read author for 2016-17 because their poetry speaks so powerfully of the need for racial and social justice.

Heritage Center to offer Finnish classes

In the coming year, Finland will celebrate its centennial, and what better way to celebrate with them than to speak the language of our forefathers? That’s why Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC) is offering a pair of Finnish classes to provide folks with an opportunity to learn the basics of the language, or to brush up on their existing skills.

Festival Ruska back for second year

As the Copper Country becomes ablaze with colorful leaves, Finlandia University will celebrate its roots with Festival Ruska 2016.

The second annual Festival Ruska gets under way on Tuesday, September 20 with lecture by a Finnish professor on the psychic lives of plants, and concludes on Thursday, October 13 with the season premiere showing of the Nordic Film Series, with several ethnic events on the days between sure to appeal to all audiences.

Rekha Ambardar hosts workshops and publications in summer 2016

Associate Professor of Marketing Rekha Ambardar is known around the literary community for the many publications, presentations and workshops she’s hosted. The summer of 2016 was another busy one for her.

Locally, she conducted a fiction writing workshop on pacing in fiction for Copper Country community members at the Portage Lake District Library in June.

Campus Ministry seeking donations for The Table

Donations are still being accepted for The Table: A Student Needs Pantry located in the Chapel of St. Matthew. They can be dropped off at the Campus Pastor’s Office in the basement of the chapel at anytime.

“Thank you to all dropping donations off,” Campus Pastor Soren Schmidt said. “The needs pantry and the students thank you. We have consistent usage of the pantry, and items continue to need replenishing.”

Hey students – it’s time to register to vote!

Finlandia University faculty and staff are looking to help students get the information that they need to register to vote in the upcoming general election. For the rest of September, and the first week of October, faculty and staff will be at tables providing registration forms for states that allow paper forms, and providing information for those states that require online voting.

Second Tuesday recital series starts Sept. 13

On Tuesday, September 13 Finlandia University Campus Ministry will host the inaugural Second Tuesday Recital Series featuring poetry, music, dancing and acting in Finlandia’s Chapel of St. Matthew. The event will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.

Finlandia’s TRIO Talent Search secures $1.75 million

Federal grant funds enable continued programming through 2022

Finlandia University’s TRIO Talent Search is proud to announce it has successfully secured $1.75 million, or $349,920 per year for five years, in federal funding that will keep the program funded through 2022, pending federal appropriations.

“We’re excited to continue working with the project participants, their families, and community partners to assist students obtain success now, through post-secondary education,” Program Director Joe Zerbst said.
