Saturday, September 3 was a busy day at Finlandia University as the university held a dedication ceremony to remember an alum who was lost too soon, an unveiling for a new building dedicated to a Finn who made progress possible at FinnU and watched its football team begin its second season of NCAA Division III play at beautiful McAfee Field.

Shawn Wickersheim Memorial Student Lounge

The day started with an intimate gathering in the Paavo Nurmi Center’s new Shawn Wickersheim Memorial Student Lounge as teammates, friends and family members gathered to remember and honor Shawn, a 2008 graduate and three-sport athlete at the university. More than $8,000 was raised through a memorial fund that helped make the new student lounge possible. Additional photos from the dedication will soon be on the Finlandia University Facebook page.

Donations are still being accepted for the memorial fund. You can donate at fulions.com/wick.

Terry Talo Lion’s Den Unveiling

Family and friends of the late Terry Talo had a front-row spot as FinnU unveiled the brand new Terry Talo Lion’s Den Saturday prior to the football game. The building hosts the Finlandia football team’s locker room, and is the latest sign of the progress being made at Finlandia University. The den was made possible due to the generous support of the Finnish-American community, including that of the late Talo.

Finlandia football opens 2016 season

The results weren’t ideal, but it was still quite a memorable game for the Finlandia Lions football team. The Lions were down 24-0 early in the second quarter, but used SISU to battle back within 10 by the midway point of the fourth quarter. For more on the game visit fulions.com. Sophomore Jalyn Wade

Sophomore Jalyn Wade pulled in this interception during the second quarter to start the Lions comeback. The offense cruised down the field, and ran in a touchdown on the ensuing drive.
