Nicholas Tobey Elected as 2020 Student Representative

April 27, 2020

The 2020 Finlandia University graduating class will have a celebration unlike any other. Although the May 21st commencement ceremony will not be in person like previous years, but a virtual ceremony instead, the graduating class will still hear from their student representative, Nicholas Tobey. Tobey has been a successful student and leader in and out of the classroom.

“It is truly an honor that I was selected as the student representative for the 2020 class,” said Tobey. “This class is full of great people and I feel very fortunate to be with them for my four years here and am excited to see where they go in the future. Ever since my first year, I wanted to be selected as the student representative, and having this class with me makes it so much better.”

Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Tobey found his way to the Upper Peninsula.Student Rep 2020

“I don’t think I could have had a better college experience than at Finlandia. I gained so much more than just an education,” said Tobey.

His hard work and excitement about helping the campus community has not gone unnoticed around Finlandia.

“Nick has been fantastic to work with. He has a strong work ethic that makes him a great leader,” said Leann Fogle, Director of Residence Life and Advisor of Student Senate. “Instead of delegating work to others, he would jump into a project and work with his team to get things accomplished. He would also get his team excited about projects. I never thought I would see a group of six students get excited to shovel off a broomball court, but under Nick’s leadership, I saw it happen twice. He loves Finlandia and that shows. His goal was always to give back to the school and help it becomes better and better each year.”

After four years at Finlandia, Tobey will be finishing with a 4.0 GPA, and graduating Summa Cum Laude.

I really enjoyed the accounting program. Laura Sieders was such an amazing professor and she really took an interest in our work and our lives. I am fortunate that I will be leaving with such a wide knowledge of the field and hope to build on what I have learned later on.”

Tobey’s accomplishments extend past the classroom and into his extensive list of extracurriculars.

  • Member of the Men’s Ice Hockey Program (4 years)
  • Member of the Cross Country Team (1 year)
  • Academic excellence award; Men’s Ice Hockey (3 years)
  • Lions Award winner; Men’s Ice Hockey (Senior year)
  • Peer Tutor (4 years)
  • Student Ambassador (3 years)
  • Student Senate Secretary and Treasurer (1 year)
  • Student Senate President  (2 years)
  • Dean’s List (4 years)
  • NCHA All-Academic Team (3 years)
  • Ponsse Internship (Summer 2019)

“I was able to experience a great community, build lifelong relationships, and be a student-athlete. I am thankful for everything that Finlandia has given me and the friends I have made here. Finlandia will always be special to me,” said Tobey.

After graduation, Tobey has been selected to attend the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in June.
