FinnU Shark Day hosting local students for entrepreneurship competition

March 4, 2022

Shark Day Logo TransparentOn this week’s episode of Finlandia Fridays, Education Partner Manager and Dual Enrollment Advisor Lauren Huested joins the show to talk about FinnU Shark Day. A play on the show Shark Tank, the March 9 event focuses on teaching students in their junior and senior years about entrepreneurship, creativity, working in a team and public speaking skills. The final winners will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship to attend Finlandia to be used in the fall of 2022 or 2023.

Competing in the event are students from three local area high schools: Baraga Area, Calumet and L’Anse. Community members, including local business owners, will join Finlandia International School of Business faculty on the judging panel.

“Students are going to come in, they are going to learn the basics of what entrepreneurship is, they are going to learn marketing concepts, and then they’re going to be broken into different groups,” Huested said. “The goal is to get them thinking creatively so that they can build these pitches,” she later added.

The event is great for students who may already have an interest in business but is open to all students regardless of their academic interest.

“It’s also to get students to understand that entrepreneurship is part of every single field that you could go into. So, artists are entrepreneurs, people in technology, healthcare can be entrepreneurs – it’s very broad.”
