Finlandia University held its final Spring Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 7, honoring 92 graduates in the Class of 2023. Following commencement, a commendation service was held for Finlandia University students, staff, faculty, alumni, neighbors and friends, commending the University and its 126 years of service.

Founded in 1896 as Suomi College, Finlandia University held its final spring commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 7, honoring 92 graduates in the Class of 2023. In March, the University announced the decision to dissolve the institution and not enroll students for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Joy Harjo is the incumbent Poet Laureate of the United States. A member of the Muscogee Nation, Harjo’s work often recalls the legacy of forced removal, and the “Trail of Tears” which saw her people driven from the Southeast U.S. to Oklahoma. Textbook Justice Library looking for textbook donations
Book donation boxes are out on campus now to collect books for the Textbook Justice Library.
This project aims to create a collection of textbooks that are used in Finlandia University classes so that students who are in acute financial need and are unable to purchase textbooks will be able to borrow the book and use it all semester long. Dekker helps to publish 80-year-old Jean Toomer manuscript
Finlandia University Assistant Professor of English Dr. Carolyn Dekker played the key role of editor in the recently published book A Drama of the Southwest: The Critical Edition of a Forgotten Play. The book is put together from a manuscript written by famous writer Jean Toomer, who passed away in 1967. The heavily credited Harlem Renaissance author wrote the play back in 1935. The unpolished manuscript found the hands of Dekker, and was published in February of this year.
