Assistant Nursing Professor Ryan Bessolo earns MSN
Finlandia University assistant professor Ryan Bessolo, MSN-BSN-RN, always knew he wanted to advance his education in nursing.Bessolo, a Calumet native and FinnU alumnus (’11), completed his Master’s of Science in Nursing from Western Governor’s University this year. With the new degree, Bessolo is promoted from instructor to assistant professor.

Finlandia helping to meet growing need for nurse practitioners
Finlandia University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is helping to fill the growing demand for nurse practitioners in the workforce.
“Finlandia’s nursing program, which is an accredited bachelor’s degree nursing program, has a rigorous curriculum and large number of clinical hours that prepare our graduates for advanced degrees in nursing,” said Finlandia’s Nursing Department Chair Johnna Therrian. “For many of our students, obtaining their nurse practitioner (NP) license is their goal when they’re done.”

Finlandia nursing program awarded Towsley grant for new HAL simulation mannequin
Finlandia University’s nursing program just grew by one.
Not one person. One mannequin.
Thanks to a grant by the Harry A. and Margaret D. Towsley Foundation, FinnU’s nursing program was able to purchase a new state-of-the-art HAL S3000 simulation mannequin for students to practice on.

Student representative Melissa Helppi talks about her time in the nursing program
As the school year winds down, Melissa Helppi dropped by to share some of her experiences during her time at Finlandia. Helppi is graduating Summa Cum Laude from the nursing program, is giving a speech during commencement as this year’s student representative and will also be speaking at the nursing pinning ceremony. Helppi mentioned that both her speeches are finished, she just needs to make a few last minute tweaks.

Soon-to-be nursing graduate Alison Patchel visited Finlandia Fridays this week to talk about her experience at Finlandia, as well as her plans for the future. Patchel is originally from Marysville, a town in the Southeastern part of Michigan. Deadline to apply for Westerman Scholarship for Nursing is March 19
Students in Finlandia University’s BSN Program are invited to apply for the Samuel L. Westerman Scholarship for Nursing by noon on Monday, March 19.
This scholarship is awarded annually, and students may apply and renew the scholarship each year assuming they continue to meet the criteria. New applicants and those looking to renew are given equal consideration each year. The number and amount of scholarships awarded depend on the funds available.

Service Learning in Tanzania with Christina Krider and René Johnson
Finlandia Fridays received a taste of Africa this week when René Johnson and Christina Krider came to talk about Service and Learning in Tanzania.
Krider is originally from North Carolina and is a senior in the nursing program.
