Globetrotting hockey player Rebecca Lilly of New Zealand talks about her times abroad and at Finlandia

Native New Zealander Rebecca Lilly joined Finlandia Fridays this week. Hailing from the small town of Gore, Lilly is studying biology, while also playing for the women’s hockey team at FinnU. Lilly has been in North America since the age of 15 to play hockey, playing in multiple places in Canada. Being able to continue playing hockey was a primary reason Lilly choose Finlandia. 50th episode celebration with leaders of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes

This week Finlandia Fridays celebrated the airing of its 50th episode with leaders of a new group on campus, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Tyler Browner and Jean Pimentel are both active members in the group and came to share their stories of how they ended up at Finlandia and what FCA has done for them.

Women’s hockey team hosting benefit for CC Humane Society

Finlandia University women’s hockey team is hosting a fundraiser, Paws for Pucks, on Saturday, February 3 for the Copper Country Humane Society. The event will coincide with the Lions game against St. Scholastica at 12:30 p.m. at the Houghton County Arena.

There will be raffle prizes and a jersey auction. All proceeds will go to the humane society.

Joe Burcar highlights bright future of Finlandia men’s hockey program

Men’s hockey coach Joe Burcar stopped by Finlandia Fridays this week to talk about home games, new recruits and upgrades to Houghton County Arena. Burcar is excited to be back on home ice, mentioning that the team has not been at home since the second weekend in November. “Any time it’s game day, especially when it’s at home, it’s a great day,” stated Burcar.

New head football coach Rob Boss came to chat about the future of Finlandia University football this week on Finlandia Fridays. Boss stated “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here,” when asked about his Finlandia experience thus far. Boss joined Finlandia’s staff last fall as an assistant, and was promoted to head coach on November 6.

NCHA Offensive Player of the Week Sierra Meiners skates by to talk women’s hockey and nursing

Senior nursing student and women’s hockey captain, Sierra Meiners visited Finlandia Fridays this week to discuss the women’s hockey team and her final year in the nursing program. Meiners was named the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association’s (NCHA) Offensive Player of the Week this past week. Andrews named head women’s soccer coach

Jordan Andrews has been named head coach for the Finlandia University women’s soccer program. Andrews has been an assistant coach for the men’s team for the last three seasons and women’s team for the last two seasons.

Kangas wins North Wind Books shootout 

Tyler Kangas, a student at Finlandia University, won the North Wind Books Sharpshooter Challenge on Nov. 11.  The challenge was at the men’s hockey game against Trine.

For the challenge, there was a board covering the net with a slot at the bottom in the middle. Kangas put his shot from the red line through the slot to win a $250 book voucher from North Wind Books. The North Wind Books challenge will be at all men’s and women’s varsity hockey home [...]

Finlandia names Rob Boss as head coach of football program

Finlandia University Athletic Director Curtis Wittenberg today announces the promotion of Rob Boss to head coach of the university’s football program, effective immediately.

“Rob has shown incredible leadership in his one year at Finlandia, and we’re confident his abilities, passion and experience are what our football program needs to take the next step,” Athletic Director Curtis Wittenberg said. “His passion for football in northern Michigan will be a huge asset for our program, our university and our community.”
