Ryan Street Garden Offering Free Vegetable Soup Making Demonstration

Ryan Street Community Garden members and Rosian Catering will demonstrate how to make simple garden vegetable soups on Monday Sept. 16 from 5-7pm. Participants will learn how to make two different types of soup, roasted carrot-ginger and tomato basil, in the Chapel of St. Matthew basement on Finlandia’s campus.

Student Volunteers Needed to Help Build Hancock Playground

The City of Hancock is looking for student volunteers to help build a playground at the Little League Field located in the Driving Park behind the Houghton County Arena. Shifts last three hours, and the the City is hoping for six volunteers on Friday, August 23 from 8am-4:30pm and Saturday, August 24 from 8am to completion.

Niska Named New Leader of Finnish Council of America

The Finnish Council of America elected John Niska as its new president this past May. Niska was raised on a beef and horse farm in Green, MI, just west of Ontonagon. His parents were bilingual and often spoke Finnish in his home, shared in Finnish customs and were very proud of their Finnish heritage. Niska went to Michigan State University for his undergraduate degree and worked in the education realm until his retirement from

Finlandia donors can triple their gifts made on Giving Tuesday thanks to two matches

Finlandia donors can triple their gifts this Giving Tuesday, as the university will have two matching incentives:

A member of the Board of Trustees has agreed to match all donations dollar for dollar that are made on Giving Tuesday, up to $20,000.

Finlandia is also participating in Facebook’s Giving Tuesday program, in which they will match the first $7 million donated that day.

All donations received this Giving Tuesday will go toward FinnU’s annual scholarship programs to help [...]

PHOTOS: Finlandia joins Houghton County Flood recovery efforts

27 Finlandia University faculty and staff along with the entire TRIO Upward Bound class volunteered on Thursday to help with Houghton County flood relief efforts. They were sent to various locations throughout Houghton County including Ripley, Hubbell and Agate street in Houghton. Jobs ranged from mucking basements to ripping up carpet to cleaning up rubble from the streets. A full album of photos can be viewed here.

Lutheran Social Services accepting online donations for flood victims

Volunteers pulling out mud and water from a flooded basement in Ripley, one of many Houghton County communities in recovery mode.

The Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan (LSS) is now accepting donations on its website for flood victims in Houghton County and surrounding areas. All funds collected will be used for direct support of affected residents for immediate supplies for survival and long term recovery. Anyone interested in donating may do so

Finlandia University is excited to welcome Hancock-native James Brey to the Admissions team as an Enrollment Officer. Brey has a Bachelor’s in Business Management from Finlandia.

Servant Leadership House hosting supply drive for shelter home

Join the Servant Leadership House in their support of the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home for women and children victimized by domestic violence. From Monday, November 28 through Friday, December 2 the Servant Leadership House girls are gathering everyday supplies necessary for a smooth running operation.

There will be drop off bins at the Maki Library, the RA Station in Finlandia Hall and the second floor of the Jutila Center. The supplies needed are extensive:
