Covid-19 Case Diagnosed at Finlandia

A member of the Finlandia University campus community (defined as faculty, staff, and students) has tested positive for COVID-19.  This case is included in the most recent numbers released by the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department

The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department is actively conducting contact tracing. Anyone who had close contact with the infected person will be notified and advised on the appropriate COVID-19 response protocol.

Ryan Street Community Garden Receives Expansion Grant

The Ryan Street Community Garden (RSCG) received a grant from the Portage Health Foundation for $5,000. The garden, found on Finlandia’s campus, will use the funds to add an additional seven plots for community members to rent, a new path along perennial beds, a bench, and picnic table. Finlandia University granted additional land for the expansion located in the lot adjacent to the Ryan House. CANCELLED: Nordic Film Series to feature Finnish historical drama on March 12

Updated 3/12/20: With the primary concern of patron safety, the Finnish American Heritage Center’s Nordic Film Series screening for today is cancelled.

A Finnish film based on the infamous witch hunts in the Nordic countries in the 1600s is the March selection for the Finnish American Heritage Center’s Nordic Film Series. Screenings will take place at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 12 at the Finnish American Heritage Center.

Finlandia University and Michigan Tech Smartzone invite all students, faculty and staff to a Midwinter Gathering at the Lily I. Jutila Center on Wednesday, Feb. 26 from 12-2 p.m. Music and hors d’oeuvres will be provided in the lobby.

The Community Pelimannit, a series of six Finnish fiddling workshops, will be held January 6–23, 2020, hosted by Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center.

Giving Tuesday Brings in Over $62,000 for Student Scholarships

Finlandia University is excited to announce it’s 2019 Giving Tuesday. Over 115 donors helped raise $62,403.25 for student scholarships.

“We are beyond thrilled by the generosity of our donors and their continued support of Giving Tuesday,” Director of Marketing and Communications Olivia Myers said. “We set a lofty goal on the day and our donors stepped up to provide our students with scholarships for the next semester.”

It’s been nearly 100 years since women in the U.S. earned the right to vote, exactly 100 years since the U.S. began official diplomatic relations with Finland, and 175 years since Minna Canth, Finland’s most famed champion for women’s rights, was born. Nordic Film Series kicks off new season with suspenseful Finnish movie

The new season of the Finnish American Heritage Center’s Nordic Film Series kicks off next week with a film that sets the mood as Halloween approaches.
