Nordic Film Series opens with local documentary UP a River

The 2016-17 season of the Nordic Film Series at Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC) gets under way with a film every Upper Michigan outdoorsman and outdoorswoman must see. On Thursday, October 13, the series opens with showings of the locally produced documentary “UP a River.”

The Table focusing on breakfast and toiletries in early October 2016

Finlandia University’s The Table: Student Needs Pantry & Services is always accepting donations. While any donations are accepted, below is a list of our focus for the next two weeks:

Breakfast Items Cereal Toaster Pastries Breakfast Bars (granola, etc.) Dry Milk Non-Dairy Milk Juices Fruits/Veggies (fresh, canned, or frozen) Toiletries Toothbrushes Toothpaste Mouthwash/Rinse

Grateful students in need utilize the pantry on a regular basis. Any and all help for collecting donations is greatly appreciated. Donation boxes will soon be placed around campus at a later date.

Join Hei Suomi staff for Meet and Greet on October 10

Join University of Lapland student-teachers Jarno Jokiharju and Santeri Havela and Finlandia Foundation Lecturer of the Year Sharon Rahkonen, Ph.D., for an informal coffee time and learn about the fascinating work Jarno and Santeri have been doing as teachers of the Hei Suomi program at South Range Elementary School. ISAD alum Paige Emily to be featured at K.C. Bonkers

International School of Art & Design alum Paige Emily will be the featured artist on Friday, October 7 at K.C. Bonkers in Hancock. The art show opening will be at 7 p.m., and feature the class of 2016 graduate’s latest paintings.

Commemorating the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation is this weekend

Finlandia University, the Northern Great Lakes Synod, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are hosting an event this weekend titled Commemorating the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation.

The commemorative event is September 25 and 26th with  most of the events taking place on Finlandia’s campus. Those interested in attending are asked to register early. Program, Refreshments, Sunday Evening Meal and Monday Lunch included for $70 per person.Please arrange your own housing accommodations.

Finlandia gains new Snapchat filter

Quick, pull out your phone, open Snapchat, take that perfect selfie and start swiping. Why? Because the Finlandia University Snapchat filter is officially active!

The filter can be applied to any photo or video taken on Finlandia’s main campus – reaching roughly from the Paavo Nurmi Center to Old Main.

The filter features a Finnish flag-inspired design, and it’s of course free for anyone to use. It was designed by Finlandia’s Creative Director Brad Beaudette.

Heritage Center to offer Finnish classes

In the coming year, Finland will celebrate its centennial, and what better way to celebrate with them than to speak the language of our forefathers? That’s why Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC) is offering a pair of Finnish classes to provide folks with an opportunity to learn the basics of the language, or to brush up on their existing skills.

Festival Ruska back for second year

As the Copper Country becomes ablaze with colorful leaves, Finlandia University will celebrate its roots with Festival Ruska 2016.

The second annual Festival Ruska gets under way on Tuesday, September 20 with lecture by a Finnish professor on the psychic lives of plants, and concludes on Thursday, October 13 with the season premiere showing of the Nordic Film Series, with several ethnic events on the days between sure to appeal to all audiences.

Campus Ministry seeking donations for The Table

Donations are still being accepted for The Table: A Student Needs Pantry located in the Chapel of St. Matthew. They can be dropped off at the Campus Pastor’s Office in the basement of the chapel at anytime.

“Thank you to all dropping donations off,” Campus Pastor Soren Schmidt said. “The needs pantry and the students thank you. We have consistent usage of the pantry, and items continue to need replenishing.”
