Finnish musical instrument maker Minna Hokka coming to area in June

The Finnish American Folk School welcomes Finnish musical instrument maker Minna Hokka to the Copper Country this June as part of Juhannus 2019. She’ll be offering a slate of programming that will provide attendees with a unique skill set – and at an unbelievable price!

Summer hours return to Finlandia University Gallery / Upcoming exhibits

Finlandia University Gallery in the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock announces its return to spring/summer hours.  Beginning May 9th, the gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Author Karen Dionne Visits Finlandia University Campus Bookstore for Book Signing

On Wednesday, May 29 at 12 p.m. author Karen Dionne will be at the Finlandia University campus bookstore, North Wind Books, for a book signing event for her novel The Marsh King’s Daughter.

The Marsh King’s Daughter centers around Helena Pelletier, a wife and mother born in the Upper Peninsula, struggling to deal with her past in captivity and her father’s crimes.

Finlandia University Student Nurses Take Part in Free Skin Cancer Screening Event May 25

 

Finlandia University campus welcomes dermatologist, Dr. Milton Soderberg and staff to campus on Saturday, May 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Finnish American Heritage Center.

Soderberg will be working with Hannah Wilson, PA-C, and Jordan Brooks, MD as well as the Finlandia student nurses to conduct free screenings for skin cancer.

Finlandia celebrates class of 2019

The most magical moment of the year took place at Finlandia University Sunday afternoon as the Class of 2019 was recognized during the annual commencement ceremony at 1:30 p.m. at the Paavo Nurmi Center. At the ceremony 85 students were conferred degrees, while they heard from Student Representative and Marketing Major Haley Makela, and Commencement Speaker Bishop Katherine A. Finegan.

She Shoots, She Scores with Student Representative Haley Makela

It’s graduation season at FinnU! Student representative, Haley Makela stopped by Finlandia Fridays this week to talk about her experiences as an active member on campus. Featuring guest host Monica Freeman, the two soon-to-be-graduates discussed their excitement to graduate. “I’m very thankful to be done,” remarked Makela, “it’s been a long four years.”

“It’s a great honor to be selected as the student representative. It’s something I have strived for since my freshman year,” said Makela.

Previewing Diploma Works with Senior Miranda Conroy

Finlandia Fridays was visited this week by senior intermedia student, Miranda Conroy. Hailing from Ishpeming, Conroy will have her final undergraduate work featured with the rest of the graduating art students in this year’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Diploma Works exhibition. The exhibition will take place on Saturday, May 4 at 7 p.m. in the Finnish American Heritage Center.

Finlandia Student Hannah Smith Hosting Exhibition at CCCAC

“Technique Magnifique” is an invitational exhibition of fiber art made by local and regional artists at the Copper Country Community Arts Center’s Kerredge Gallery through the May 4. Hannah Smith, intern and  graduating senior from Finlandia University’s International School of Art & Design curated this exhibition. She sought out work that was beyond the ordinary and demonstrated a particular technique.
