She Shoots, She Scores with Student Representative Haley Makela

May 3, 2019

It’s graduation season at FinnU! Student representative, Haley Makela stopped by Finlandia Fridays this week to talk about her experiences as an active member on campus. Featuring guest host Monica Freeman, the two soon-to-be-graduates discussed their excitement to graduate. “I’m very thankful to be done,” remarked Makela, “it’s been a long four years.”

“It’s a great honor to be selected as the student representative. It’s something I have strived for since my freshman year,” said Makela.

A local from Atlantic Mine, Makela is graduating with a degree in marketing. Along with her studies, Makela has been the vice president of student senate, the student representative for the Equity and Diversity committee, an member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, an orientation leader and a member of the LGBTQ+ club, which was started last semester. Enjoying the variety of organizations, Makela stated that she really enjoyed being involved with student senate.

This year, Makela finished her collegiate athletics career in both soccer and basketball. Makela made her debut as a soccer player her sophomore year. Having never played the sport before, within the past three years, Makela has had a successful career as a goalkeeper. While earning accolades on the pitch, Makela also built her reputation on the basketball court, her primary sport. Remarking on team memories, Makela described an eventful van trip to Georgia her freshman year.

With basketball in mind, Makela is looking for a job in either athletics or basketball. She has looked into both administration and grad assistant positions and has send out several applications. While hoping to leave the area, Makela is not opposed to staying local.

With four years of college under her belt, Makela gave some final parting advice for current and future students. Makela advises students to “Get involved with the school. That’s what makes Finlandia so special, there are so many opportunities to get involved and be apart of the community.”

Finlandia’s commencement ceremony will take place this Sunday, May 5 at 1:30 p.m. in the Paavo Nurmi Center Gymnasium.
