Paloheimo Fellows Program accepting applications through Nov. 9

The Paloheimo Fellows Program, a competitive study abroad opportunity, is now taking applications for the Spring 2017 class. Paloheimo Fellows are a group of four Finlandia University students who travel to Finland with Assistant Professor of Finnish and Nordic Studies Dr. Hilary Virtanen to engage in field research on Finnish society and culture. Paula Roth added to nursing faculty at FinnU

Finlandia University’s nursing department is proud to announce the addition of Nursing Instructor Paula Roth. Roth is a practicing nurse at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in nearby L’Anse, Michigan. She has more than 15 years of experience.

“The nursing profession is challenging, especially in rural areas like ours,” Roth said. “I’m excited to pass along my knowledge and my experiences to the next generation of nurses.”

SLH residents participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF

Keep an eye out for the girls in the Servant Leadership House during the week leading up to Halloween. They are once again participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF , so have your spare change ready! Some of the girls will even be in costume.

“Last year with four participants, we raised $42,” student Gina Geliche said. “We stuck pretty close to campus last year, but we will be venturing beyond the borders a little more this year as we have more people collecting.”

Wittenberg named Director of Athletics at Finlandia University

Finlandia University has promoted Curtis Wittenberg to the position of Director of Athletics, effective immediately. He had been serving as Associate Director of Athletics and Compliance.

PTA student highlighted in local news broadcast for unique story

Finlandia University Physical Therapist Assistant student Makayla Mayo was featured on WLUC TV6 this week for her unique story of overcoming health issues to achieve personal and academic success.

TRiO-Talent Search is looking for student volunteers

TRIO-TS, a grant funded program hosted by Finlandia University that assists students in 16 local schools who come from modest income homes and/or will be the first person in their family to attend college. Starting this year, TRIO-TS will be running an 8th grade Mentoring/Tutoring Program, featuring college students as the mentors/tutors. Time commitment ranges, with a minimum of 2-2.5 volunteer hours/month.

Requirements for students looking to fill the mentor/tutor role are:

Preview Day highlighted in first episode of Finlandia Fridays

This week on Finlandia Fridays we speak with Director of Admissions Travis Hanson about the upcoming Finlandia Preview Day 2016. In this episode Hanson outlines what exactly Preview Day is, and what it means for recruitment within the university.
