Biography
Wittenberg arrived at Finlandia in the fall of 2003 as a volunteer assistant for women’s basketball team. The Lions won the USCCA national championship in 2003-04 and a NCAA Division 3 regional title in 2004-05. Wittenberg was also head coach of men’s and women’s cross country (2004-05).
In 2005, Wittenberg left Finlandia to become the head coach of boys varsity basketball at Lake Linden-Hubbell. The following year he became the girls basketball coach as well.
In 2007, Wittenberg returned to Finnu as the head coach for women’s basketball team. Since finishing his coaching career in 2010, Wittenberg has served in a wide variety of administrative roles, including game event coordinator, sports information director, facilities coordinator, compliance coordinator, Assistant Athletic Director and Associate Athletic Director.
During his time as the Athletic Director, Wittenberg was part of a group that helped create and establish the American Collegiate Athletic Association in 2017. In the last three years, Wittenberg was a member of the Championship's Committee for the ACAA and was the Athletic Director liaison to the President's Council.
In the spring of 2017, Wittenberg was able to get the Finlandia football program accepted as an affiliate member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) starting in the fall of 2018.
In 2019 and 2020, Wittenberg was one of the members that helped move the institutions in the ACAA to join the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) that became official in June of 2020. In November, the CAC rebranded and is now the Coast to Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) and Wittenberg is a member of the Championships and Membership committees.
In the fall of 2020, Wittenberg moved the Finlandia football program from the MIAA to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) starting in the fall of 2021.
A native of Ovid, Mich., Wittenberg has a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science from Ferris State. He resides in Lake Linden with his wife Kelly.
