TRiO-Talent Search is looking for student volunteers

October 17, 2016

TRIO-TS, a grant funded program hosted by Finlandia University that assists students in 16 local schools who come from modest income homes and/or will be the first person in their family to attend college. Starting this year, TRIO-TS will be running an 8th grade Mentoring/Tutoring Program, featuring college students as the mentors/tutors. Time commitment ranges, with a minimum of 2-2.5 volunteer hours/month.

Requirements for students looking to fill the mentor/tutor role are:

  • Responsible college students enrolled in a local university in good academic standing who are interested in education, community service and/guidance.

Potential volunteers will need to complete a short training session and sign a volunteer agreement before meeting with Talent Search students. Successful mentors will have open conversations about college, help with homework, and encourage TS Students to work toward their goals. Volunteers must commit to the program for the 2016-2017 academic year, though school assignment may change due to change in semester schedules.

If you are interested in signing up or learning more about the Mentoring/Tutoring Program, please email High School Academic Coordinator, TRIO Educational Talent Search (ETS) Kailee Laplander at kailee.laplander@finlandia.edu.  More detailed information on the program can be downloaded below.
