Ice conditions force Heikinpäivä Polar Bear Dive cancellation

The recent warming trend has weakened the ice on the Portage Canal, so the Heikinpäivä Polar Bear Dive for 2017 is cancelled.

“We just can’t risk the safety of our participants,” Polar Bear Dive coordinator Julie Knight said. “The Coast Guard recommends that nobody be on the ice, and since the weather is supposed to be warmer than normal for the coming days, it’s not likely the ice conditions will improve in time to try to have the dive.”

Thursday night the Finlandia University Gallery was a full house as long-time art professor Joyce Koskenmaki brought together decades of her work for an exhibit titled “Retrospective.” The exhibit will remain up at the Finlandia University Gallery until February 18. Below are photos from the reception, with more photos posted on the International School of Art & Design Facebook page.

Abigail Tembreull highlights the Art and Design Program

Steps to fix time zone issues some users are having in Google

It’s been reported that some users are having issues with time zones not working correctly in Google. This has been specifically effecting calendars. The issue has been solved at a universal level, but there are some users who are still experiencing the problems. Please follow the steps below to solve them.

Soup and Art Auction fundraiser set for Saturday

Young Women’s Caucus for Art raising money for conference

The Young Women’s Caucus for Art at Finlandia University is hosting its annual Soup and Art Auction fundraiser Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Finnish American Heritage Center.

The fundraising event includes all-you-can-eat homemade made soup, including a couple unique Finnish recipes that are usually a big hit with the crowd. Live music, an art auction and a dessert bar will also be included. Money raised will be used to [...]

Schedule for 18th annual Heikinpäivä now available

Hancock is once again playing host to the Finnish-American winter cultural festival Heikinpäivä. The 18th annual celebration begins Wednesday, January 25 at Quincy Green and continues through Monday, February 6, with events at locations throughout Hancock.

The main day of festivities is Saturday January 28, with such notable events as the opening parade in downtown Hancock at 11 a.m., and the Polar Bear Dive at 3 p.m., located on the Hancock waterfront near Copper Island Beach Club.
