MLK Day of Service at FinnU

In 2016 a new tradition ingrained in service and community was inaugurated at Finlandia University to pay tribute to a man who had a dream – Martin Luther King, Jr. As a Baptist minister who saw no separation between faith and social activism, Dr. King changed the trajectory of civil rights in the United States. To honor his memory, classes are suspended for the day so that Finlandia students, staff, alumni and friends of the university might make their little bit of difference serving our community.

While there are no regular classes held on Monday, January 20th, 2020, in observance of MLK Day, your participation in one of three activities goes on record as attendance credit for any Monday classes that were suspended for MLK Day. Attendance will be taken at all three opportunities and passed on to faculty. You have the option of participating in any of the following opportunities:

  • Community Service on Monday, January 20 signing up below
  • Worship Service on Sunday, January 19, 6:30 p.m. at the chapel of St. Matthew with Finlandia University’s Pastor Sarah Semmelersmith.
  • Screening of the film When We Were Kings, a film discussing the perception of African-Americans and Africa in the Black Power era on Monday, January 20 at 6:30 p.m. in Wargelin 303.

Don’t forget to join the Finlandia community for an MLK Day brunch at Finlandia Hall on Monday, January 20 from 11:00 a.m-1:30 p.m. – (free and open to all students and employees but does not count as attendance participation for Monday classes).
