October 22, 2019

most affordable bachelor's degreesFinlandia University is celebrating another award, this time for affordability. FinnU was ranked by Affordable Schools as the most affordable school in the Upper Peninsula as part of the Most Affordable Schools in Michigan for a Bachelor’s Degree. Across the entire state, FinnU was ranked 13th out of 20.

“The sticker price is not the final price in private higher education,” Dean of Students Erin Barnett said. “For smaller schools like Finlandia, closing the gap between the cost of tuition and a student’s overall need is important. We do this from the beginning of the process, with a free application, through the final scholarships awarded, based on both need and merit.”

Affordable Schools’ mission is to help students make smart, higher education choices. The rankings for the Most Affordable Schools in Michigan for a Bachelor’s Degree awards were based on average cost of attendance, graduation rates, and student-to-faculty ratio.

“College affordability goes beyond the cost of attendance,” said Barnett. “It also includes the return on the investment of time and money. Finlandia prepares students for meaningful careers through internships, clinicals, international exchange opportunities, scholarship and real world skill application.”

Making Private Education Affordable

Finlandia offers a number of scholarships for students to help offset the cost of tuition. 100 percent of full-time, domestic students receive some sort of financial assistance. For students from the Upper Peninsula, the UP Commitment Grant offers $4,000 to all new incoming students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher who graduated from a UP high school.  Other initiatives include the Finnish Strong Transfer Scholarship, which gives $10,000 to students who transfer to FinnU with at least six transferable college credits and a GPA of 2.0 or higher, and the various Entrance Scholarships available to students.

These and other institutional scholarships help ensure private education in the Upper Peninsula will not equal large sums of student debt. To learn more about scholarship opportunities at FinnU, visit https://www.finlandia.edu/financial-aid/scholarships/
