Dr. Virtanen to Present at Sonderegger Symposium on U.P. Studies Nov. 6

Dr. Hilary-Joy Virtanen, Assistant Professor of Finnish & Nordic Studies at Finlandia University, will present her research on Yooper stereotypes at Northern Michigan University’s annual Sonderegger Symposium on Upper Peninsula Studies on Friday, November 6. Traditionally, the symposium takes place on the campus of NMU in Marquette, but this year’s symposium will be an entirely virtual event that can be accessed through the Zoom online meeting platform.

Arts & Sciences will offer B.S. in Biology, Psychology; two new minors beginning Fall 2020

Finlandia’s Suomi College of Arts & Sciences is excited to introduce two new bachelor’s degrees and two new minors for fall 2020. The new degrees are a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Science in Biology. The new minors students can explore are Military Science and Global Studies.

Finlandia University has received one of its most significant endowment gifts to date from the estate of Onni and Dorothea Harju.

Like many other Finnish American men, Onni grew up on a farm with very humble beginnings. Through his lifetime of hard work and investment – which included growing Christmas trees on the Red Granite, Wisconsin farmland – Onni planted his strong Finnish roots by investing in the future.

Seniors Kaylor Holmstrom and Dana Pakulski recounted tales of their times as Paloheimo Fellows this week on Finlandia Fridays. The Paloheimo Fellowship is an opportunity for Finlandia students to study a topic in Finland for several weeks for little-to-no cost.

WWI Dissent Exhibit Opens Friday, September 14

The interpretive exhibit, Copper Country Voices of Dissent in the Great War, will open with a reception on Friday, September 14 at 7 p.m. and talk by Dr. Hilary-Joy Virtanen at 7:30 p.m. at the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock. This exhibit examines the ways in which Copper Country residents expressed dissent to the United States’ entrance into World War I and the ways in which these activities reflected America’s reaction to the war nationally.
