Kalevalathon 2023: An ‘epic’ discussion with Dr. Hilary-Joy Virtanen

Kalevalathon 2023 Facebook CoverFinlandia Fridays is a great way for students, employees and the community to find out about exciting happenings around campus and in the Upper Peninsula. Hosted by Finlandia University’s Communications Department, Finlandia Fridays is an entertaining way to stay up to date with school events, stimulating discussions and student stories. 

In this week’s episode, Dr. Hilary-Joy Virtanen joins the show to discuss an exciting upcoming event, Kalevalathon. Happening on Tuesday, February 28, this will be the 5th annual reading marathon of The Kalevala, which is the national epic poem of Finland. February 28 is simultaneously Kalevala Day, which is celebrated annually in Finland as the Day of Finnish Culture. 

In the episode, Virtanen shares how to register or tune in, as well as a few of the things she’s most excited about regarding this year’s event. 

Virtanen’s three PBS regional premieres are currently available in-store at Finlandia University’s bookstore, North Wind Books.
