Keweenaw Bike to Work Day is Friday

Everyone is invited to participate in the eighth annual Keweenaw Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 20. The event will be held on National Bike to Work Day, and is coordinated locally by Bike Initiative Keweenaw (BIKE!) in an effort to raise awareness of bicycle commuting as a transportation alternative, bike safety, and the importance of sharing the road.

Hancock 2016 Construction Project starts May 2

Construction starts Monday, to last into early fall

PROJECT: The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is reconstructing about a mile of US-41 in Hancock from the Portage Lake Lift Bridge to Lincoln Drive. Work includes removing and replacing the existing roadway, with drainage improvements. Streetscape work includes decorative street lighting, curb bump-outs and landscape plantings. The City of Hancock will be performing water main and sanitary sewer improvements in addition to MDOT’s project.

Summer Bridge Program designed to improve academic success

Last week Finlandia University introduced the Summer Bridge Program. This type of program is trending in higher education right now, and it’s clear why: Bridge programs can help ease students’ transition to university life and improve their academic performance and success rates.

Missouri college names Klaver president

Finlandia University Vice President for Institutional Advancement Lenny Klaver has accepted the position of President at North Central Missouri College in Trenton, Missouri. He will begin in his new role Monday, May 16.

Dekker helps to publish 80-year-old Jean Toomer manuscript

Finlandia University Assistant Professor of English Dr. Carolyn Dekker played the key role of editor in the recently published book A Drama of the Southwest: The Critical Edition of a Forgotten Play. The book is put together from a manuscript written by famous writer Jean Toomer, who passed away in 1967. The heavily credited Harlem Renaissance author wrote the play back in 1935. The unpolished manuscript found the hands of Dekker, and was published in February of this year.

For the second time Finlandia University participated in THE Project 2016, a project management competition sponsored by the Western Michigan Chapter of the Project Management Institute. This year’s competition featured 12 teams from eight Michigan universities.
