Hancock 2016 Construction Project starts May 2

April 29, 2016

Construction starts Monday, to last into early fall

PROJECT: The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is reconstructing about a mile of US-41 in Hancock from the Portage Lake Lift Bridge to Lincoln Drive. Work includes removing and replacing the existing roadway, with drainage improvements. Streetscape work includes decorative street lighting, curb bump-outs and landscape plantings. The City of Hancock will be performing water main and sanitary sewer improvements in addition to MDOT’s project.

TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS: The project will require a detour, with two-way traffic on Hancock Street. Motorists should expect a significant increase in traffic on Hancock Street.

Construction will proceed from east to west in stages. The first construction stage will require the closure of Reservation Street and US-41 (Quincy Street) from Reservation Street to Tezcuco Street. Tezcuco Street will remain open to traffic for as long as possible. Due to the Reservation Street closure, northbound traffic will not be able to access White Street. Reservation and White streets will be reopened to traffic after the completion of the first construction stage.

To maintain access to businesses, local traffic will be permitted on Quincy Street in the areas outside the active stage, with total closures in the work area. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project.
