Meet Brittney, Liberal Arts Senior at Finlandia

February 23, 2015

MEET Brittney

Hometown: Anchorage, Alaska

Class: Senior

Major: Liberal Studies

Putting “Student” into “Student Athlete”

Brittney flew into Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula as a high school senior, and immediately fell in love with it. It offered her exactly the kind of atmosphere she wanted: A small campus with a personal touch. This is the place she was going to come to play NCAA Division III hockey.

Plus, the university offered her a really unique outdoor experience with some of the snowboarding, snowmobiling, downhill skiing, Nordic skiing, hiking and kayaking opportunities in the U.S.

After four successful years of being a student athlete, she couldn’t be happier.

“They say student athlete for a reason, because you’re always going to be a student first. You have to go to class, you have to do the right things to be that student athlete.”

She was able to also play a couple other sports she grew up loving: soccer and softball. She played a season with both teams, and found that with proper determination and time management, she was able to have a lot of fun while still getting her school work done.

Earning that degree, and more importantly, that first job

The schoolwork has been a success, too. While many students find a business degree to be their calling and way into the business world, Brittney’s path wasn’t that immediately obvious. The focus on math wasn’t her thing. Enter Finlandia’s liberal arts degree.

“Liberal arts gave me an opportunity to expand and pick different concentrations for my major.”

It worked. Last spring at the career fair Brittney connected with local business LJJ Construction who hired her part time as a student, and upon graduation Brittney will be headed to the Houghton-based company on a full-time basis.

FINLANDIA FOUR

FINLANDIA FUTURE

Wish you could predict the cost of your four years at Finlandia? Now you can. Finlandia Four freezes the tuition rate at the time you are accepted for the length of your program.

For example, if tuition is $10,000/semester your freshman year, it will remain the same as you earn your degree (eight continuous semesters for a bachelor’s degree; four with an associate’s degree).
