2020 Student Representative, Nicholas Tobey Shares His FinnU Experiences

May 15, 2020

With virtual graduation a week away, the Class of 2020 Student Representative, Nicholas Tobey, caught up with host Anastazia Hartman to talk about his time here at Finlandia.

“It’s definitely an honor, it’s something I thought about since my freshman year, and my roommate actually did it. It was kind of a challenge for me,” said Tobey. “Since I have been here it became less of a personal thing and much more of me being happy I get to represent my class. I think being  the student representative is a goal. I wanted to make sure I was able to represent my class and school.  I really appreciate it and I am really happy. I hope I am able to in my speech to do the class justice.”

Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Tobey came to Finlandia to study accounting and play on the men’s ice hockey team. Soon after his freshman year, he began to become more involved on campus. After four years Tobey held three positions within Student Senate, finishing his last two years as the President. He also was a peer tutor, student ambassador for three years, was a member of the cross country team for one year, completed an internship through the business program with Ponsse in Finland and Wisconsin, has won multiple awards, was named to the NCHA All-Academic team three times, and Finlandia’s dean’s list for four years. Tobey will be finishing with a 4.0 GPA and graduating on Thursday, May 21st Summa Cum Laude.

Tobey shared with Hartman the coolest moment of his four years at Finlandia. “Getting the internship with Ponsse and going to Finland was amazing but I think the coolest thing all four years was my last senior night hockey game,” said Tobey.  “I was skating off the ice, I was in tears a little bit, it was really emotional. The entire crowd gave me and the other seniors out there a standing ovation. That was honestly the coolest thing of the entire time I’ve been here. ”

Tobey also shared what his classmates can look forward to in his speech. “I tried to make it not about me, but about the class. I wanted everyone in to put themselves in those shoes, and say ‘you know I wrote this speech or I wrote this speech’ I didn’t want it to sound like me talking about myself.

“I wanted it to sound like the class talking about us and what we have accomplished, what we have done. I am just very thankful to be the one that got to deliver that message.”

Be sure to join us on Thursday, May 21st at 6 p.m. to hear Tobey’s speech along with a message from commencement speaker Darlene King, President Philip Johnson and Dr. Fredi de Yampert.  The virtual commencement ceremony can be found on our website at finlandia.edu/virtual-ceremonies/.  We encourage you to tag us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and show us how you are celebrating!
