Expert ultra-endurance athlete coming to Keweenaw

Finlandia University Community Wellness, Michigan Tech Wellness and the Outdoor Adventure Program at Michigan Tech have teamed up to bring ultra-endurance athlete Heather Anderson to town for a Trail Tune-Up event on Saturday, April 15. Anderson is a Michigan native that has held the record for FKT (fastest known time) on the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails.

Employees offered 20 percent discount on golf membership

Finlandia University employees are eligible for a discounted rate at Portage Lake Golf Course for the 2017 season. The course, which is located in Houghton, is offering a discounted rate for memberships of $580, the usual rate is $725 – that is a 20 percent savings. Those interested in getting the savings need to contact Director of Athletics Curtis Wittenberg. The discount is only for Finlandia employees, not family members. Coach Mo talks basketball and life in the U.P. on Finlandia Fridays

John Motherwell AKA Coach Mo or as his twitter followers know him @Coach_Mo joined Finlandia University’s ranks this spring as the head coach of the women’s basketball program. This week Finlandia Fridays was able to catch up and learn more about Coach Mo, including diving into his accomplished 18 years of coaching and how he found his way to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Martial arts club participates in regional tournament

Charles Patch, a sophomore Nursing student, along with his instructor, Dr. Carolyn Dekker, competed at the Soo Bahk Do regional tournament last weekend in St. Charles, Il, taking home second place trophies in forms and sparring.  The Leijona Martial Arts Club at Finlandia will continue to practice through the summer and hopes to return to the tournament with a bigger contingent next spring.

Nordic Film Series wraps season with tale of knife fighters

The 2016-17 season for the Nordic Film Series at Finlandia University’s Finnish American Heritage Center concludes this month with showings of the 2012 fictional drama Härmä. The showings will be at 2 and 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 13 in the FAHC’s Martha Wiljanen Community Hall.
