Coach Mo talks basketball and life in the U.P. on Finlandia Fridays

April 7, 2017

John Motherwell AKA Coach Mo or as his twitter followers know him @Coach_Mo joined Finlandia University’s ranks this spring as the head coach of the women’s basketball program. This week Finlandia Fridays was able to catch up and learn more about Coach Mo, including diving into his accomplished 18 years of coaching and how he found his way to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Coach John Motherwell at Finlandia UniversityCoach Mo knew from the jump that he wanted to live and coach in the upper Midwest, so when the opportunity at Finlandia University presented itself he immediately jumped at it. Coach Mo mentions that truly he loves the area and “to now call it home is even better.”

Motherwell is no stranger to the sport of basketball. He has coached in various programs over his tenure, including coaching at all three levels of NCAA basketball. However, this is his first head coaching gig, and it’s one he can’t wait to get started with. Motherwell notes that the team was a tremendous shooting team last year from behind the arc, attempting over 700 3-pointers. This is not the offense he prefers to run, but he doesn’t fail to mention that the success was there last season. The culture of the players is inherent with the area, and an important reason for their success “they have a great work ethic, they know what hard work is and they play that way.”

For the team to continue to be successful, Coach Mo notes the culture needs to remain strong. Hard work and the continued efforts from the players is the reason they have had success in the past and is how they will continue to progress. “Once all that is established, the wins will follow,” said Coach Mo.
