Wear Denim on R.A.I.N.N. Day to Support Sexual Assault Survivors

September 6, 2017

Wear denim on R.A.I.N.N. day, Thursday, September 21 to show support for survivors of sexual assault. In conjunction, campus clubs will host activities at Finlandia Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of the It’s On Us event series.

The organization Peace Over Violence established Denim Day in remembrance of a survivor of sexual assault who was accused of consenting to sex because she was wearing tight jeans during the incident. The court ruled that it was impossible for her attacker to take her jeans off without help, therefore implying that she must have consented to the actions. The Finlandia community is encouraged to wear denim on September 21 to show support of sexual assault survivors, and take a step towards changing societal tendencies of victim blaming when considering sexual assault cases.

The Denim & R.A.I.N.N. day activities in Finlandia Hall will feature booths from the Student Senate, the Young Women’s Caucus for Art, the Servant Leadership House, and more. Attendees will be able to Pledge It’s On Us, pick up a t-shirt to participate in the upcoming Clothesline Project, and paint your nails teal, the color of sexual assault awareness. There will be a multitude of ways to show your support for sexual assault survivors and learn how you can help remedy sexual assault culture. Learn more about It’s On Us at finlandia.edu/itsonus.
