The annual tradition of Finlandia University students taking the day off from classes and participating in community service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day is being altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of testing and social distancing guidelines, many of the opportunities that students normally have for community service, like visiting nursing homes and reading to school-aged children, are no longer available.

On Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day students and staff at Finlandia University take a break from classes and give their energy to the local community. To pay tribute to the man that changed the trajectory of civil rights in the United States, the annual Finlandia MLK Day of Service puts the normal university day on hold so that FinnU students, staff, alumni, and friends of the University can make their little bit of difference through small acts of kindness.
The 6th annual Diversity Dinner is set to be held Tuesday, November 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Finlandia Hall Café.

Vietnamese
The event is free for Finlandia students and $10 for the public. Come taste food from around the world as FinnU students cook food from countries of their national origin.

Black Student Union President Dewan Keeling dropped by Finlandia Fridays this week to talk about his experiences at FinnU and the upcoming Diversity Dinner. Keeling is a junior from Detroit, who is majoring in healthcare management.

Leann Fogle joins Finlandia Fridays to kick off the second half of season three. Fogle is the Director of Residence Life at Finlandia, and is apart of the planning committee for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

The annual Diversity Dinner date is Wednesday, April 18th from 5 to 8 p.m. in Finlandia Hall’s café. Dinner will be free to Finlandia University students and $10 for everyone else. Single rooms in Finlandia Hall are available for students on a first-come first-serve basis for the Fall 2017 semester.
“These rooms are always in high demand as they provide an excellent experience for our students,” Director of Residence Life Leann Fogle said. “If interested, I would highly suggest moving quickly because this opportunity is not likely to be available long.”
