Previewing “By Faith” with Karin Van Dyke

September 20, 2019

This week Finlandia Fridays was visited by Vice President for Advancement Karin Van Dyke to tell us all about By Faith and the events that will be happening this upcoming weekend. Van Dyke also discusses Parade of Nations and the history surrounding the event.

By Faith is an event that is happening throughout the weekend. The purpose is to recognize the 140 alumni graduates of the Suomi Seminary from 1904-1958. The seminary is the origins of Suomi College, now Finlandia University. There are 5 seminarians out of the 140 still living today and of the remaining living seminarians, 4 of them are able to attend this weekend.

This event is meant to bring the living alumni together with their families as well as celebrate the ones who are no longer with us. With over 100 people attending this weekend, there is a schedule of events that are happening on both Saturday and Sunday.

In the mix of events, there will be a dedication of a special sculpture, titled By Faith, that will be installed outside of the Chapel of St. Matthews. It has a copper element to represent the Copper Country.

Van Dyke also mentions the new pastor her at Finlandia, Sarah Semmler Smith. She has worked in youth ministry and young adult ministry over 10 years in her career. “Meeting her, she’s very dynamic, she’s very well spoken, she’s empathic, and she is coming to our campus at exactly the right time,” said Van Dyke. Smith will officially be introduced on Sunday at the worship service.

In addition to By Faith, there is Parade of Nations and both men and women’s soccer teams are home this weekend along with the football team. For more information on the happenings this weekend, see the links below the podcast.
