For the second episode of Lion Around, Monica Freeman decided to test a few student’s knowledge with a Michigan slang test. Freeman tested her co-host Gina Geliche, as well as art and design students Denia Bent and Ramona Kuhn. The idea initially came from Freeman watching Youtube videos of actors and actresses sharing slang from their respective countries or states, which made Freeman curious as to what was considered Michigan slang. WWI Dissent Exhibit Opens Friday, September 14

The interpretive exhibit, Copper Country Voices of Dissent in the Great War, will open with a reception on Friday, September 14 at 7 p.m. and talk by Dr. Hilary-Joy Virtanen at 7:30 p.m. at the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock. This exhibit examines the ways in which Copper Country residents expressed dissent to the United States’ entrance into World War I and the ways in which these activities reflected America’s reaction to the war nationally.

Finlandia Alumni Board calls for new members, sets annual meeting for September 28-29

The Finlandia Alumni Board (FAB) is accepting nominations for new members. Interested alumni can self-nominate by emailing Olivia Myers at olivia.myers@finlandia.edu with their name and a few sentences of why they would like to be involved by September 17.

Whether you are looking to learn Finnish, or brush up on your existing language skills, the Finnish American Heritage Center at Finlandia University is the place to be this fall. The Center will offer 10-week classes in Beginning Finnish and Intermediate/Advanced Finnish, starting in mid-September.
