In Finlandia University’s ongoing effort to quickly and directly share important information with the campus community, all employees and students are invited to sign up for free text alerts. Finlandia University will notify you of campus emergencies and delays/closings via a text message to your cell phone. Women’s hockey team hosting benefit for CC Humane Society

Finlandia University women’s hockey team is hosting a fundraiser, Paws for Pucks, on Saturday, February 3 for the Copper Country Humane Society. The event will coincide with the Lions game against St. Scholastica at 12:30 p.m. at the Houghton County Arena.

There will be raffle prizes and a jersey auction. All proceeds will go to the humane society.

Visiting scholar to discuss Sami-church relations

Rev. Bror Träskbacka, a leader in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland (ELCF) will offer insights into the relations between the Church and Finland’s indigenous people — the Sami — at a special presentation on Tuesday, February 6 at the Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC).

Musician Jonathan Rundman discusses artist in residency for Heikinpäivä

Finlandia Fridays was visited this week by musician Jonathan Rundman. Rundman is the musician in residence this year for Heikinpäivä. Originally from Ishpeming, Rundman currently lives in the Twin Cities and makes a living off being a singer-songwriter. Rundman stated that he always wanted to be a musician, even when he was little, and was glad his career kick started in the 90’s, before streaming was around. Ponsse Einari Vidgrén Foundation Internship application period is now open

Once again, Ponsse and Finlandia University are pleased to announce an exclusive internship position for a Finlandia University student at Ponsse North America in Rhinelander, Wisconsin (approximately two weeks) and Ponsse Plc headquarters in Vieremä, Finland (approximately three weeks). This paid internship will enable the student to learn first-hand about Ponsse, its operations, and the forest industry both here in the USA and in Finland.

Karl Bohnak and Kathryn Remlinger book signing scheduled for Heikinpäivä

North Wind Books welcoming two regional authors

Authors Karl Bohnak and Kathryn Remlinger will be on hand for Heikinpäivä 2018 with book signings scheduled for Saturday, January 27. Bohnak will be at North Wind Books starting at 11 a.m., and Remlinger will be at the Finnish American Heritage Center’s Historical Archive starting at 1 p.m.

The signings are being hosted by North Wind Books, the official bookstore of Finlandia University. Books from both authors are available now.

Finnish American Heritage Center to offer Finnish language classes

The Copper Country is one of the few places in the United States where you can hear the Finnish language spoken in public on a regular basis. Travis Cornwell talks communication degree, radio internship and study abroad

This week Finlandia Fridays was visited be senior communication major Travis Cornwell. Originally from Minnesota, Cornwell stated “Finlandia kind of found me. I was in Vegas at a showcase for hockey, and they were one of the last schools to look at me, so I decided to give them a chance.
