Finlandia Alumni Board seeking new members

The Finlandia Alumni Board (FAB) is accepting nominations for new members. Interested Suomi or Finlandia alumni can self-nominate here. Nominations will be accepted until June 1, 2021.

As an advisory group to the university, the mission of the FAB is “the promotion of the vision, mission, goals and programs of Finlandia University.” The goals of the FAB include:

Alumni Update: Bigalke Named Principal of Ludington Area Catholic School

Finlandia University alumna, Jan Bigalke, recently accepted the role as Principal at Ludington Area Catholic School. She earned an associate degree in nursing from Suomi College and has more than 16 years of experience working as a registered nurse. After getting her associates from Suomi College, Bigalke earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Ferris State University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Dayton.

Kurt Hilden (’71) Grateful for Liberal Arts Education; LGBTQ Allies at FinnU

Kurt Hilden’s (’71) journey through life has been anything but boring.

A native of the Copper Country, Hilden graduated from Lake Linden high school in 1969. Despite moving west, a moment of Hilden’s family history is forever captured at the Houghton County Museum in Lake Linden in the form of a painting of his paternal grandfather’s family by the Finnish artist, Toyra. Hilden described the painting at “primitive” but it is registered with the Smithsonian.

Criminal Justice alumna, Louise Owens (’80), dedicated to helping others at work and home

Louise Owens ’80 with her two grandchildren.

Louise Owens (‘80) always wanted to be two things: a police officer and a mother. Although she had been interested in criminal justice since kindergarten, she never imagined herself going to college. She assumed she would enter the workforce as a secretary. Until the day she saw a sign for Suomi College.

Leading the Pride Solves Crimes with Cold Case Homicide Detective, Clem Papineau Pt. 1

Finlandia’s alumni podcast Leading the Pride is back this month and solving crimes with Cold Case Homicide Detective Clem Papineau. Unlike past alumni featured on Leading the Pride, Papineau attended Suomi College from 1975-76 but transferred before completing his associates degree in Criminal Justice.

Finlandia Homecoming set for October 3-5, 2019

Finlandia’s Homecoming 2019 date has officially been set. Student activities will take place beginning the week of September 30, with specialized alumni events October 3-5.
