The interpretive exhibit, Copper Country Voices of Dissent in the Great War, will open with a reception on Friday, September 14 at 7 p.m. and talk by Dr. Hilary-Joy Virtanen at 7:30 p.m. at the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock. This exhibit examines the ways in which Copper Country residents expressed dissent to the United States’ entrance into World War I and the ways in which these activities reflected America’s reaction to the war nationally.
Kotilla, a comic creator and artist will share her personal experiences with crowdfunding and self-publishing. She will focus heavily how to launch a Kickstarter campaign, find a printer and prepare work for print.

Finlandia University Gallery presents Joyce Koskenmaki: Retrospective, an exhibit of paintings, drawings, and mixed media work spanning Koskenmaki’s lifetime career in the arts. As the Copper Country becomes ablaze with colorful leaves, Finlandia University will celebrate its roots with Festival Ruska 2016.
The second annual Festival Ruska gets under way on Tuesday, September 20 with lecture by a Finnish professor on the psychic lives of plants, and concludes on Thursday, October 13 with the season premiere showing of the Nordic Film Series, with several ethnic events on the days between sure to appeal to all audiences.
