Snowflake Challenge with Ginger Alberti |1:00 – 6:00 p.m. | Sew Cranky
Heikinpäivä Snowflake Challenge project, for everyone, beginners too! Learn to quickly sew a pattern on a black felt square (with an antique hand crank sewing machine), which is then entered into the contest with cash and gift certificate prizes! $3 to enter. All ages. Winners in all skill levels. If bringing a group, or with general questions please call (818) 606-0065.

January 11 & 18

Inkle Band Weaving Class (FAFS) |5:30 – 8:30 p.m. | Jutila Center
Learn to weave a colorful strap on an inkle loom with Phyllis Fredendall. Learn more and register at Finnish American Folk School

Sew a Laudeliina or Placemats Workshop (FAFS) | 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. | Sew Cranky
Sew a linen sauna seat mat on antique hand crank sewing machines with Ginger Alberti. $35 plus materials fee- Learn more and register at Finnish American Folk School

Vanhimmat (folk & ballroom dance lessons) with Kay Seppälä | 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. | Finnish American Heritage Center
In preparation for the Iltamat dance learn, or relearn, polkka, schottische, mazurka and raatikkoon. No partner nor pre-registration necessary. $5 per student.

Nordic Film Series – “Sirkka: Past & Present” | 2 p.m. | Finnish American Heritage Center.

January 19

Traditional Straw Himmeli Mobile Workshop (FAFS) | 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. | Finnish American Heritage Center
Make a traditional Finnish straw himmeli with Alice Margerum. $30 plus materials fee  Learn more and register at Finnish American Folk School 

January 20

Family Fun Night/Hobby Horse Hoedown with Kay Seppälä & Ginger Alberti | 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. | Finnish American Heritage Center
An evening of fun for the whole family, including music and Finnish dances, Hobby Horse indoor games and obstacle arena, themed games, and dances, (all ages!) … If you have a hobby horse ride it in! (horses to borrow too). Do not forget you can ride your horses in the parade on the 28th, too! $5.00 per family.

Club Finndigo – the Finnish film Pelican Man (Pelikaanimies) | 2:00 p.m. | Calumet Theater
Screening is preceded by a coffee and nisu social at 1 p.m. Admission is $5 per person.

January 24 & 31

Knit a Neckwarmer Class (FAFS) | 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. | Jutila Center
Knit a neck warmer based on traditional Finnish sweater patterns from Vörå (Vöyri) with Clare Zuraw. $50. Learn more and register at Finnish American Folk School

Finnish Cookies Workshop (FAFS) | 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. | Finnish American Heritage Center
Learn to bake popular Finnish cookies with Finnish Canadian baker Harri & his renkiserkku Jim Kurtti. $20. Learn more and register at Finnish American Folk School

  • Parade | 11:00 a.m. | Quincy Street, Hancock | Cash prizes
  • Karhunpeijäiset | Join the costumed parade participants in a circle dance
  • Outdoor Games (including vipukelkka, kick sleds, Wife Carrying, etc.) | Immediately following the parade
  • Polar Bear Dive | TBA
  • Mark Munger: Book talk & signing | 1:00 p.m. | North Wind Books
  • Iltamat (Dance & Buffet) | 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. | Finnish American Heritage Center | $15 | Music by Back Room Boys
  • Animal Life: Art from the Kalevala – opening reception  | 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. | Copper Country Community Arts Center | Traditional Finnish refreshments will be served
