Stepping Up to the Plate with Denia Bent and Joey Krug

March 8, 2019

With spring break around the corner, Finlandia Fridays was visited by softball player Denia Bent and baseball player Joey Krug. Heading to Florida for the annual spring break games, guest host Briana Gorman talked to Bent and Krug about their upcoming seasons.

From Cape Coral, Florida, Bent is a junior majoring in graphic design. Outside of softball, Bent is a member of student senate and is a work study in the communications department. Krug hails from San Diego, California and is majoring in sports management. As a senior, Krug plans to graduate and stick around Finlandia to help the team out. Last year Bent earned Female Athlete of the Year, while Krug won Male Athlete of the Year. Both Bent and Krug were not expecting the honor, but were grateful for the award, showing off their hard work and dedication.

With warm weather in their future, both Bent and Krug are looking to escape the snow and play on a real field. Krug mentioned he is looking forward to “finally getting out of the gym and being able to get some fly balls and experience game-like situations.” With several inches of snow on the ground, both teams are forced to practice in the gym, so adjusting to different playing situations can be odd. Bent stated that indoor conditions can be more forgiving than outdoor conditions.

This year the baseball team is moving into the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Krug is excited about the new conference. “This opens up opportunities for pretty much everything. The WIAC is top of the totem pole for D3 baseball and there are lot of opportunities for the team,” he stated.

Two conference tournament championships already under their belt, the softball team is looking to keep the streak alive. Bent stated that the pressure is on, but she is confident in her team and new coach. Matt Farrell took over the position last fall and is transitioning well, remarked Bent. With a new coach comes some adjustments, but Bent is positive that good things are coming.
