MLK Day of Service 2020 with Molly Berg and Mia Glenn

January 17, 2020

In the first episode of the new year, host Anastazia Hartman is joined by Molly Berg and Mia Glenn, members of the women’s basketball team to discuss the fourth annual MLK Day of Service.

Students and faculty will not be reporting to class as they usually do on Monday morning. Instead, students, staff and faculty are continuing one of Finlandia’s newest and most rewarding traditions – MLK Day of Service. MLK Day of Service is when our Finlandia community heads out to local organizations to help make a difference to pay tribute to the man that changed the trajectory of civil rights in the United States. Individuals have the opportunity to give their time and energy to groups such as local elementary schools, St. Vincents, Dial Help, ReStore, Little Brothers, Canal View, and many others.

“Two years ago I was in a classroom and read books,” said Berg. “And we ended up going to a few different classrooms to read and talk about MLK Day.”

To start MLK Day, a worship service will take place on Sunday, January 19 at 6:30 pm in the Chapel of St Matthew. On Monday, January 20, Finlandia students will be out volunteering from 9 am to 4 pm, and the film screening of  “When We Were Kings” will begin at 6:30 pm in Wargelin 303.

With service being the main part of Finlandia’s mission, MLK Day of Service doesn’t only create positive works throughout Houghton and Hancock but it also brings our Finlandia community closer together.
