“It is an honor to receive the board of trustees Rising Star Teaching and Service Award. I consider this award as one of the benchmarks in my professional journey. One of the criteria for this award was “going above and beyond” to serve the Finlandia University, community, and student population,” Sergeyeva said. “ I would like to bring the reader’s attention to the fact that the quality and quantity of my contribution to these three areas of service would not be possible without the support of my colleagues and nursing students. I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart.”

Dr. Fredi de Yampert, who presented the award at the commencement ceremony, serves as Finlandia’s Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Dean of College of Health Sciences.

“Irina has been an energetic addition to the nursing faculty. Joining the full time nursing faculty in 2015, she has brought with her a wealth of experience and innovative ideas for engaging the nursing students not just in the classroom, but in activities outside of the classroom as well,” Dr. de Yampert said. “ The students appreciate her positive approach to education and nursing practice.”

10 year Board of Trustees member and Chair of the Academic and Assessment Committee, Dr. Jeanne Kemppainen, was able to comment on their selection of Sergeyeva for the award as well.

“Irina truly exemplifies the qualities of a Finlandia University Board of Trustees “Rising Star” faculty member. She’s distinguished herself in teaching and goes “above and beyond” in service to the university and the broader community,” Dr. Kemppainen said. “Her energy and enthusiasm for teaching nursing is apparent, and she inspires success in her students. We are fortunate to have our Rising Star, Irina, as part of the Finlandia Faculty.”

Sergeyeva has gone from adjunct instructor to now associate professor. She has volunteered countless hours across committees for ethnic aid, SANE, recycling, leadership and most recently the UP Health Portage Board of Trustees. In 2016, Sergeyeva had her first article “Technology Management as a Tool for Learning Outcomes Improvement” published in TIIJ and she likewise presented the article at the 5th IAJC/ISAM Joint International Conference. She has also been recognized for 5 outstanding contributions, volunteer appreciation certificates and letters.
