International School of Art and Design Addresses Online Learning

April 24, 2020

On this week’s episode of Finlandia Fridays host, Anastazia Hartman is joined by the Dean of the International School of Art and Design, Denise Vandeville, to discuss how online learning is effecting students in the Art & Design programs.

“Two-thirds of our courses are studio-based, so that was one of the first things we needed to address,” said Vandeville. “We also have classes that are lecture-based classes, those were much easier to move to the online environment. As we moved into what was going to happen to our four studios areas, I worked with professors and we started to develop game plans. Each is different depending on the requirements for the materials needed for the medium.”

Due to small class sizes, professors were able to provide students with the materials they needed to complete their courses that they would usually complete in studio spaces. Along with providing students of different mediums with materials, professors have worked to keep classes feeling as normal as possible, especially for the senior class who would soon be presenting their diploma works.

“We are trying to keep as much normalcy as possible, we have studio videos with seniors through Zoom and we are reassuring them that those who are taking photographs who might not be photographers, that it will not affect their grades,” said Vandeville. “We are still going to have presentations like we normally do and we are planning on October to have our diploma works shown at the university gallery. We are hopefully going to bring our seniors back and still have that celebration, which I think is so important to finish up their time with us.”

The Brule Art Scholarship awards an incoming art and design student $20,000 over four years. After submitting a preliminary portfolio to best prepare you for this competition and studying Art & Design at Finlandia you must participate in a mandatory portfolio review day which take place over Zoom. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is April 26, 2020. The mandatory Zoom portfolio review day is on May 9, 2020.
