Finlandia named Best Value School for second consecutive year

August 7, 2018

Finlandia University has been named a 2018 Best Value School by University Research & Review. This marks the second consecutive year Finlandia has made the list.

“If you are an individual who likes to experience the four seasons in a unique academic environment and don’t want to create a future ‘debt bomb’ to deal with, devote some time to examining Finlandia University,” reads University Research and Review’s review of FinnU.

Best Value SchoolDirector of Student Financial Services Sandra Turnquist says the fact that 100 percent of traditional full-time students receive some form of financial aid is a big factor in the decision.

“We gave out $4.15 million in scholarships and grants in 2017,” said Turnquist. “If you compare the sticker price to other private universities, Finlandia is extremely affordable.”

Turnquist credits the different price structures FinnU offers to transfer, part-time and full-time students, including the $15,000 Promise for the RN-BSN online program as another reason for the award.

“The one-on-one attention we can provide students and their families is important,” said Turnquist. “We listen to their stories and come up with a solution that best fits their needs. Parents and students are very thankful for the attention and focus they receive.”

But Turnquist also noted that it’s more than price that makes Finlandia a Best Value School.

“Look at the career trajectory of our alumni and the one-on-one classroom attention,” said Turnquist. “We were just named a Top 10 School for a Career in Athletics. You can’t put a price on that.”

“Students at Finlandia experience a value not seen at larger institutions, aside from financial aid packages, through small classes, individualized attention, and support from caring faculty and staff,” said Dean of Students Erin Barnett. “We pride ourselves on uncommon attention and developing the whole student.”

Barnett also noted that FinnU’s support systems add an incredible amount of value to the students’ education.

“As a school that prides itself on the support it provides to its students, Finlandia’s value added is seen both in the classroom and out,” said Barnett. “Through academic coaching and our TRIO Student Support Services program, we partner with our students as they work toward achieving their academic and personal goals.”

About the University Research and Reviews Best Value School Award

The prestigious Best Value School Award honors schools that stand out for multiple reasons; to distinguish the unique and special from the generic, expensive and common. These schools are reviewed by former college presidents and CEOs who consider, among other things, cost and student feedback. If an institution is too expensive, it is eliminated from consideration.

Finlandia is one of five Michigan universities that was named a Best Value School for 2018.
