Going International with Director of Global Initiatives Cat Fuller

March 1, 2019

Finlandia Fridays crosses borders this week with Director of Global Initiatives Cat Fuller. Member of the FinnU family since September, Fuller describes her job as “dealing with everything international.” Fuller deals with international recruitment, study abroad, and assisting faculty members who want to run their own programs abroad or do research abroad.

Fuller’s first semester saw her overseas, visiting China, the Netherlands and Finland. In China, Fuller visited area high schools to recruit students and attended a fair in Beijing. In the Netherlands, Fuller attended a recruitment fair, finding several students who were interested in FinnU. Visiting Finland, Fuller established relationships with several partners, while also experiencing the schools. In the future, Fuller will be heading back to Finland to recruit students.

Fuller stated she loves working with international students. Meeting students abroad, getting them interested and excited to come to FinnU, and watching them develop over four years is Fuller’s favorite part of her job. Fuller mentioned she is proud to see her international students graduate and enjoys seeing what they go on to do in the workplace.

This semester, Fuller is developing relationships with students and promoting programs on campus. Fuller highly recommends study abroad for students. Coming from a small town herself, Fuller remarked that going out into the world can be intimidating. Learning about, and keeping an open mind to different cultures and places is important, stresses Fuller. “It doesn’t matter what major a student is in, they’re going to be dealing with people from other places,” she said.

There are several different opportunities for students looking to studying abroad. Opportunities vary from semester-long programs, to summer-long programs, and take place in multiple places. For more information on studying abroad, students can contact Fuller or check out finlandia.edu/studyabroad.
