Closer Look at Nursing Families with Students, Elizabeth Hauglie and Courtney Mayo

February 28, 2020

On this episode of Finlandia Fridays, host Olivia Meyers is joined by Finlandia University nursing students, junior Elizabeth Hauglie and sophomore Courtney Mayo to talk about Nursing Families.

The initiative titled, Nursing Families, is a new tradition where junior-level students “adopt” freshman and transfer students to help guide them through the first year of the educational program. The practice of academic families is well known in some European universities and is a great way to make first-year students feel more comfortable in a new environment.

Both Hauglie and Mayo were paired together as “Academic Mom” and “Academic Kid” to both build a relationship through sharing experiences in the nursing program, but also help support each other through the rigorous class load.

Mayo mentions, “For the night of my first clinical I had no idea what I was doing with paperwork. I texted Ellie (Hauglie) and she met me at the library and showed me what to do.”
