TRIO Talent Search Program at Finlandia University awarded grant to help low income, potential first generation students access higher education

Hancock announces summer movie schedule on Quincy Green

The City of Hancock has announced their summer movie schedule to be held Thursdays at sundown on Quincy Green, nestled into the cozy corner knoll between the Hirvonen CHS building and the Finnish American Heritage Center. Finlandia’s community is encouraged and welcome to attend the free events, just don’t forget your blanket and snacks! Finlandia announces FinnFlex

New to Fall 2021, Finlandia University announces FinnFlex. A new meal plan program scheduled for rollout by October 1, FinnFlex provides students ‘flex’ in their diets with funds that can be used at off-campus restaurants through newly formed partnerships. The pilot program, led by Finlandia Dean of Students Erin Barnett, will also feature the new service through on-campus vending machines. All meal plans, except Block Plans, will include varying amounts of FinnFlex to spend.

Semester Textbook Awards open until August 7

The FinnU Vacc to School Challenge, which will provide free textbooks for the semester to 10 Finlandia students, is open to submissions until August 7.  To apply, students are asked to submit their full or partial (1st shot) vaccination card. Winners will be announced on August 20 at a live drawing event during Convocation. The award will be redeemable for either semester during the 2021-2022 school year.

Finlandia hires new PTA Program Director

Finlandia University has recently hired Melanie Thurmond as its College of Health Sciences Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program Director and Assistant Instructor.

Thurmond (’06) attained an associate’s degree from Finlandia’s PTA program and a bachelor’s degree from DeVry University in Finance. In addition, Thurmond holds a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Findlay, an opportunity provided by Finlandia’s graduate pathway toward the DPT program. Visiting Scholarship deadline August 1

Available until August 1, 2021, Finlandia University is offering a $1,000 Visiting Scholarship for both in-person and virtual visitors. FinnU has approachable professors, friendly students, spacious dorm rooms, a sun-filled café and a gorgeous location that are all awaiting you.

Finlandia Earns Academic Honors

Finlandia University was well represented on the 2020-21 Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) All-Academic team.  A total of 34 Lions were on the list.

The criteria for the team was being a member of a C2C championship sport and having a 3.20 G.P.A. or higher for the 2020-21 academic year earn a spot on the All-Academic team. A total of 53.4% of C2C student-athletes posted a 3.20 GPA this year (1,329 of 2,490).

Work-Study job openings posted for 2021-22

Finlandia University has posted its Federal Work-Study Program student job openings for the 2021-22 school year. The program, led by Financial Aid Counselor Marie Bonenfant, is administered and coordinated by the Office of Financial Aid and Human Resources. Finlandia receives funds each year from the federal government to administer the program and pay the students. The program encourages community service and work related to the student’s course of study whenever possible.

Alumna Shayla Cornish (’21), an afternoon shift nurse at Canal View nursing home in Hancock, Michigan, reflects on her experience as a nursing major in Finlandia’s Hirvonen College of Health Sciences.
