Albert Hammond (’20) Joins Finlandia’s Business Office

Albert Hammond (’20) recently joined Finlandia’s Business office as an Accountant.

Hammond grew up in Elk Rapids, Mich., and graduated from Finlandia this past spring, with a Bachelor of Business Administration and a specialization in Accounting.

“As an accountant for Finlandia University, it is my job to analyze and record business transactions – accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, etc. – and gather and create data for financial statements,” said Hammond. “I also handle the processing of payroll and work-study payouts.”

Hammond says his favorite thing about working in the Business office is being able to have his input on Finlandia’s current accounting methods be heard. He appreciates being able to have creative freedoms to allow the office to be as efficient as possible.

“Some of the best advice that I was given during my time at Finlandia was to never overthink a solution to any problem that we may encounter,” said Hammond regarding advice he’d give to current students. “Accounting is a very complex and intimidating profession, but there are many times where the solutions are a lot simpler than they may seem at face value.”

Hammond wants students to know that accounting is more than just sorting out numbers. As an accountant, you will analyze documents like invoices, and you will have to understand financial statements. You’ll also have to understand how to use current accounting technology such as payroll software, Excel spreadsheets, and ADP. 

Hammond would like to let all students know that the accounting department is a service provider for the whole campus. The office sees all monetary transactions that are going in and out of the university, from payroll to student payments, to bills, etc.
